Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction Treatments

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition, and for many men it can be effectively treated with prescription medicines known as PDE5 inhibitors. These medicines help improve blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused.

The most commonly prescribed ED treatments are sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil. While they work in similar ways, there are important differences between them.

Sildenafil / Viagra®

What Is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is one of the most widely used treatments for erectile dysfunction. It was the first oral ED medication introduced and is commonly known by the brand name Viagra®, although generic versions are now widely available.

Generic vs Brand

  • Viagra® is the branded version

  • Generic sildenafil contains the same active ingredient and works in exactly the same way

  • Generic versions are equally effective and usually more affordable

How Sildenafil Works

Sildenafil increases blood flow to the penis by relaxing blood vessels. It only works when you are sexually stimulated, it does not cause an automatic erection.

How to Take Sildenafil

  • Taken 30–60 minutes before sexual activity

  • Swallowed with water

  • Best taken on an empty stomach, as heavy meals can delay its effect

Dosage

  • Typical starting dose: 50 mg

  • May be adjusted to 25 mg or 100 mg depending on effectiveness and tolerance

  • Only one dose should be taken per day

How Long It Takes to Work

  • Usually starts working within 30–60 minutes

How Long It Lasts

  • Effects last for around 4–6 hours

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Headache

  • Flushing

  • Indigestion

  • Nasal congestion

  • Dizziness

These are usually mild and temporary.

Tadalafil / Cialis®

What Is Tadalafil?

Tadalafil is known for its long duration of action, making it a popular choice for men who prefer greater flexibility. The branded version is Cialis®.

Generic vs Brand

  • Cialis® is the brand name

  • Generic tadalafil works the same way and is equally effective

How Tadalafil Works

Like other ED treatments, tadalafil improves blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.

How to Take Tadalafil

There are two ways tadalafil can be taken:

As Needed

  • Taken 30–60 minutes before sex

Daily Use

  • Taken once daily at a lower dose

  • Allows for spontaneous sexual activity without planning ahead

Dosage

  • As needed: 10 mg or 20 mg

  • Daily use: 2.5 mg or 5 mg

  • Dose depends on lifestyle and medical suitability

How Long It Takes to Work

  • Begins working in 30–60 minutes

How Long It Lasts

  • Effects can last up to 36 hours

  • This is why tadalafil is sometimes called “the weekend pill”

Possible Side Effects

May include:

  • Headache

  • Indigestion

  • Muscle or back pain

  • Flushing

  • Nasal congestion

Muscle aches are more commonly reported with tadalafil but usually resolve on their own.

Vardenafil / Levitra®

What Is Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is another effective ED treatment, similar to sildenafil but sometimes better tolerated by certain individuals. It is also available in generic form.

Generic vs Brand

  • Levitra® is the branded version

  • Generic vardenafil is equally effective

How Vardenafil Works

Vardenafil improves blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, helping to produce a firm erection.

How to Take Vardenafil

  • Taken 30–60 minutes before sexual activity

  • Swallowed with water

  • Can be taken with or without food

Dosage

  • Typical dose: 10 mg

  • May be adjusted to 5 mg or 20 mg

  • One dose per day only

How Long It Takes to Work

  • Starts working in about 30–60 minutes

How Long It Lasts

  • Effects last around 4–6 hours

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are similar to other ED medications and may include:

  • Headache

  • Flushing

  • Indigestion

  • Dizziness

  • Nasal congestion

Are These Treatments Safe?

These medications are safe and effective for most men, but they are not suitable for everyone. They should not be used if you:

  • Take nitrate medications

  • Have certain heart conditions

  • Have been advised against sexual activity by a doctor

A consultation is required to ensure the treatment is safe for you.
