Why get vaccinated for travel?
Vaccines play a key role in protecting you from infections commonly seen in the UK and from illnesses that may be encountered when travelling abroad. They strengthen your immune system, helping it recognise and fight off harmful diseases, lowering the risk of severe illness and easing pressure on the NHS. Routine vaccines offered in the UK include flu, shingles, and HPV.
If you are visiting certain destinations, you may also require travel-specific vaccinations such as yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A, or malaria prevention. Some countries even mandate proof of vaccination before allowing entry.

Cholera
The cholera vaccination is given orally and usually involves two doses, which need to be taken a minimum of 7 days apart. In order to be protected abroad, you need to finish the course at least one week before travelling.

Dengue Fever
Plan to get your first vaccine at least three months before your trip, if possible. This allows time to receive both doses before you leave. The first dose can be administered up to 14 days before travel. If you can't complete both doses before travel, get the first dose and then complete the second dose after you return. The second dose is typically given three months after the first.

You should get your Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio booster two weeks before travel. If you have had the vaccine before, you will need one dose as a booster. If it’s your first jab, you may need several doses.

Hepatitis A / B (Twinrix)
At least five weeks before travelling. The vaccine schedule you need depends on your age and when you are travelling. You may require 3 or 4 doses to be fully protected against both diseases. The Pharmacist will assess which schedule is suitable for you. In some cases, an accelerated course may be suitable. The accelerated course consists of three doses prior to travel and a fourth dose 12 months later to fully complete the course. The second dose is given one week after the first dose and the third dose is given two weeks after the second dose.

Hepatitis B (Over 16 years)
In order to complete the full course in time, you need to get the first dose at least one month before travel. The course consists of three doses. The second injection is given four weeks after the first, and the third injection should be given five months later (completing the course in six months). If travelling at short notice, you may be able to get an accelerated course. You will receive the second injection after seven days, followed by the third injection at least 14 days after the second.

Japanese Encephalitis
You need to get the first dose ideally five weeks before you travel in order to be able to complete the course in time. The course consists of two doses. The second dose needs to be given ideally 28 days after the first. You are protected from seven days after the second dose.
